murder rates in western countries -- even in this crazy country you and i live in, john -- are way less than in undeveloped societies.

if you had had the misfortune to be born to a woman in the amazon in 1973 instead of in a small rual town in idiana, you'd already be dead, almost certainly.

you'd have been murdered by a neighboring tribe.

assuming that hadn't happened (not a safe assumption, at all) we move onto your second most likely cause of death: "old age", at 32.

murder rates in countries with labels like "socialist" and "secular" are even lower than in the US, too.

its easy to say that this is because of the judeo christian influence -- but pre-christian rome has amazingly low murder rates among male landowners.

it has taken humans about 5,000 years to move from the jungles to where we are now, and to develop social contracts on how we ought treat each other.

but we've come a LONG way, and we will continue to improve as we get rid of the death penalty, torture, and wildly divergent beliefs in unprovable fantasies that lead men to kill one another in order to please god.

hopefully that will come sooner than later.
