In the last week or so we've been talking about the recent debate between Kirk Cameron, Ray Comfort and two atheists from The Rational Response Squad, Brian and Kelly. What many people may not realize is the impetus behind how that debate came to be. Ray and Kirk invited Brian and Kelly to a debate in response to their pro-active effort by the RRS to recruit non-believers to commit the unforgivable sin--namely, blaspheming the Holy Spirit.
According to their website, the rules for the Blasphemy Challenge, as it is called, are simple: "You record a short message damning yourself to Hell, you upload it to YouTube...somewhere in your video you must say this phrase: 'I deny the Holy Spirit.'" (To this point, there are 1281 people who have posted videos...and counting...)
As disturbing as it is to comprehend such a blatant affront to God, we must remember that given the atheistic presuppositions about God, the Bible, Jesus, and hell, this kind of response is a logical outworking of those presuppositions. For example, if you truly believe there is no God, and that the Bible is merely a book of man's invention, incorporating man-made concepts of hell and the notion of an unforgivable sin, then why should you worry. It's all fiction anyway, right? Well, you'd better hope so...
If you have even an inkling that there might be a God, to project that kind of brash arrogant disregard for the prospect of eternal damnation is not a trump card I would be willing to flirt with. As flippantly as many of those folks might view an eternity in hell, there is much more at stake than they realize, and God forbid they die, because by then it will be too late to change course.
If you haven't seen this challenge, proceed with discernment, because for those of us believe in the Bible and the Ephesians 6 principles of spiritual warfare, you realize that this war of worldviews to which I repeatedly refer, is very real, with human souls and eternity hanging in the balance. It is very easy for the Church to sit in the safe confines of our padded pews and fail to put feet to the Christ's call to reach people with the true hope that only comes through Him. So, encourage those you know to either read this post and be made aware, or check out The Blasphemy Challenge directly to wake up to the challenges that are before us.
So if somebody does deny the Holy Spirit and then later wants to repent of that can they?
